Happy Saturday! Saturday mornings are for brunching and catching up with dear friends. If my former roomie Abigail was in town more and not traveling to faraway countries, I would meet up with her for brunch all of the time. Abigail is the perfect brunch date. She loves to lounge and drink mimosas with me, and she lives near U Street by so many great spots!
We tried out The Getaway in the Columbia Heights area recently. The prices didn’t look too bad and the atmosphere seemed pretty relaxed from the website.
Unfortunately, the hip top floor was reserved for a private party. (I stowed this idea away for another time… a brunch party? Sounds amazing.) I was sad it didn’t work out because the floor was filled with sunlight and it seemed like a good ambiance.
We enjoyed our time downstairs though, in a dimmer bar area filled with stools and quaint, vintage booths. Brunch runs from 11am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The menu has all of the best sweet and savory options that you would expect: omelettes, pancakes, french toast, benedicts, etc. Bottomless mimosas are only $15, and you can order orange, mango, and passion fruit types. The same goes with Bloody Mary drinks; you can choose the level of spiciness in each order.
To start, we could not resist trying the rosemary and goat cheese dumplings, described as crispy wonton skins filled with goat cheese and fresh rosemary–garnished with lemon honey. This dish looked to us like goat cheese empanadas. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
For our main courses, we both made custom omelettes. The mushrooms were obviously fresh and not from a can, which made the place gain instant credibility in our eyes.
Our server happened to also be the manager. He was very down-to-earth, and actually gave us a discount on our bottomless mimosa orders since we didn’t ask for too many of them. It made me wonder how many drinks people usually order at The Getaway!
The Getaway is a great no-frills place to catch up and enjoy solid food with friends. I would definitely go there again, and would even consider hosting an event at the place sometime!
