I can’t stop making variations of this strata by smitten kitchen. This morning, I tore up pieces of a bagel, sautéed spinach and chopped onions in butter over the stove, and mixed in proscuitto, feta, and swiss cheese. Eggs and milk over everything, no sitting overnight… just straight to the oven and it’s smelling wonderful right now! This dish was truly a hodgepodge combination of what was left over from the week.
With brunch on my mind, I wanted to share a meal from all the way back in March of this year. My long-time friend Shea was in DC for the weekend and we hadn’t seen each other in years! Shea might be the friend who I have known the longest in life. We grew up at the same church together when my family lived in Norfolk. We have known each other since birth, so we have had the privilege of going through all kinds of glorious 90’s trends together–Spice Girls, Tamagotchis, roller skating rinks, etc!
We decided to check out Firefly in Dupont since she could walk to it from her hotel. I wish I had more pictures to share, because the vibe is snazzy. The interior is colorful and light-filled. Shea beat me there, and I found her sitting in a cute little lounge area. Hungry groups of girlfriends sat all around us waiting for a table and sipping mimosas.
My one instagram picture from the brunch shows my Eggs Benedict with Truffle Fries. The dish comes with regular homestyle fries, but I couldn’t help myself when I saw the truffle version on the menu. A great substitute!
I know that bottomless mimosas/bloody marys are all the rage these days, but I appreciate restaurants like Firefly that just offer $2 mimosa options. The bottomless route makes me feel pressure to keep getting refills and before I know it, my stomach is full of sugar. If you just want one or two (or even three) mimosas, I think it’s easier–and cheaper–to go with the reasonably-priced choice that Firefly offers.
I really want to go back here for another brunch, or even a different meal. One of my coworkers, a very savvy DC restaurant girl, talks about their pot roast all the time and often chooses the place as her dinner recommendation for out-of-town guests. While I’m not a huge pot roast fan, I definitely hope to see what their dinner scene is all about soon!
